2024年度　データサイエンスPBL I/II　AY 2024　Data Science PBL I/II

データサインエンス Project Based Learning I/IIではバイオサイエンス、マテリアルサイエンスの領域での実際の研究データを基にした実習をとおしてデータサイエンスの応用について学ぶことを目指します。/ In this course “Data Science Project Based Learning I/II”, we will provide practical training for applications of data science based on recent researches in bio science and material science.

コースは7~9月のPBL Iと10~12月のPBL IIに分かれています。データサイエンスプログラムを選択した学生は両方が必修ですがそれ以外の学生についてはPBL Iだけの受講も可能です。/ This course is composed of PBL I (Jul. ~ Sep.) and PBL II (Oct. ~ Dec.). Note that the students in the Data Science Program shall take the both, otherwise you may take just PBL I.

PBL I では5、6人のグループに分かれ、いくつかの課題とデータセットの中からテーマをひとつ選択して共同で議論しながら分析、考察、検証し、その結果について発表してもらいます。/ In PBL I, we will ask you to form groups of 5~6 students and choose one of the themes and datasets we prepared. And work together to analyze the data, discuss and verify, and present your results.

PBL IIでは各自、自分の研究テーマで扱っているデータを対象として、必要な解析手法を学び、工夫しながら適用し、研究の進展に繋げてもらうことを目標とします。/ In PBL II, we ask each students to learn the methods of data science to apply them to their own research themes.

DS-PBL I

PBL Iでは最初にテーマ説明とグループ分けとを行い、最後に発表を行ってもらう予定ですが、本年度はオンライン会議またはオンラインとのハイブリッドとする予定です。In PBL I, we will first introduce the tasks and themes and make the working groups. And in the end of the term, we will ask you to present your results. Note that, in this year, we plan to use an online conference for both.

期間中の作業については、グループ内で自由に調整して進めて構いません。1週間か、少なくとも2週間に一回は集まって進捗をTAと共有するように。PBL用のSlackワークスペースを設定しましたので、各自活用して連絡や相談に使ってください。 / During the term, arrange and share your tasks in each group. Please have a discussion meeting in every one or two weeks. We have invited you to a Slack workspace to make use to promote your joint works.

レポート提出 / Report submission

1. Summarize the works of your group

• Background and motivation
• Materials and methods
• Results
• Discussion and evaluation
• References

2. Explain your contribution in the group

• Describe “when” and “what” you have done explicitly (thus, regular meetings are recommended).
• Any types of contributions would be OK (i.g. implementation, gathering new data, data cleansing, active suggestion in discussion, evaluation of results etc…)

A4 2 pages (excluding figures and references)

DS-PBL II

PBL IIは、各人が自分の研究テーマ関連の課題、あるいは興味のある別の課題に、データサイエンス的な視点から取り組み、レポートを作成、提出していただきます。自分の研究についてデータサイエンス的な手法を適用するのが難しい、思いつかない、などの場合、事前に相談してもらえれば、他領域の学生と共同で分野融合的なテーマを選んでもらっても構いません。ただし、同領域の学生とグループを組むのは不可とします。レポート作成の際にも自分で解析を行い、それぞれ個別に報告するようにしてください。

At PBL II, each student will work on the themes related to his / her own research (or some other issues he / she is interested in) from a data science perspective, and submit a report. If it is difficult to apply data science methods to your research, or not sure about how to apply, you can consult with colleagues in other divisions and select a theme that is interdisciplinary, but it is not allowed to form groups with students in the same division. Remember that you should analyze and write a report by yourself individually.

レポート / Submission of the report

• 提出先：ユニパにアップロードし、指導教員に提出 / Upload to the Universal Passport and submit to your supervisor.
• 提出期限：2025 一月上旬 / Deadline: early Jan. 2025
• レポート形式：自由　PBL Iのようなレポートのテンプレートや枚数制限はありません。データの概要や図表などもご自由にご記載下さい。/ Format: Free. No limitation in the length. Use figures and tables and citations at your will.

なお、提出いただいたレポートからいくつか優秀なものを選んで、相互レビューをオンラインで行うことを考えています。選ばれたレポートは匿名化の上、他の受講者に公開される可能性があることをご了承ください。
そのため、もしご自身の研究内容に守秘事項などがある場合は、指導教員とのご相談の上、一部の内容を非公開にする、あるいは詳細を伏せるなどの対策をとってレポートを作成してください。

Note: We are planning to have an online review session later using selected reports. Your report may be anonymized and shown in that session.
Please consult your supervisor if your work includes confidential matters, so that you may exclude or hide some details.

Slackワークスペースについて

グループ内のディスカッション及び全体的な質問、アナウンスのためのSlackワークスペースを用意しました。/ We have opened a Slack workspace for general announcement and group discussion.

受講予定の学生には招待リンクをメールしますので、各自ログインして下さい。スタッフ、TA宛の質問は随時こちらで受け付けますので、課題の進め方など気になる点があれば遠慮なく聞いて下さい。/ We will send a mail of invitation URL so that you can login the workspace. Please feel free to ask any questions about the course, staff and TAs will answer on the board.
